Overview & Highlights

CAFETERIA CHOCOLATERIA LOS NUEVOS ALPES is a charming espresso bar nestled in the vibrant heart of Madrid on Calle Mayor. This cozy spot brilliantly captures the essence of a traditional Spanish café while offering an inviting sanctuary for locals and tourists alike craving quality coffee, indulgent sweets, and quick local bites.

Step inside, and you’re met with the warm aroma of freshly brewed espresso and rich hot chocolate, two cornerstones of their beverage menu praised by many visitors. Their churros, paired with velvety hot chocolate, have earned loyal fans who appreciate the authentic taste and comforting texture, making it a perfect choice for anyone looking for a sweet Spanish treat. Beyond churros, the café features a delightful selection of infusiones gourmet, including delicate China Gunpowder, fragrant India Darjeeling, and comforting Original Rooibos—each brewed to highlight its unique flavors with finesse.

The bakery offerings here are equally tempting. From flaky croissants and creamy-filled napolitanas to tender muffins and sweet donuts, every bite promises fresh, artisanal quality. For those looking to satisfy a bigger craving, the gofre with chocolate ice cream and fluffy tortitas with cream and syrup deliver a luscious balance of textures and tastes that perfectly complement the café’s beverage selection.

What truly sets Los Nuevos Alpes apart is its genuine atmosphere. Despite its central location on a busy tourist street, the café maintains a welcoming, unpretentious vibe. Staff like Maria and her team greet guests with warmth and enthusiasm, ensuring that every visit feels personal and attentive. Many guests mention how the friendly service and relaxed ambiance make it a favorite retreat amid the city’s bustle.

Food lovers will appreciate the presence of hearty local dishes like the vegetarian paella—a rarity in downtown Madrid—celebrated for its authentic flavors and satisfying balance of ingredients. This small bar/café strikes a delightful harmony between quality and value, making it an ideal stop for a quick meal or leisurely break. Customer reviews consistently highlight the fair prices for such a prime location, with favorites like fresh juices, flavorful coffee, and traditional churros drawing repeat visits.

While some visitors have noted issues with bathroom cleanliness, this appears to be more a reflection of foot traffic than neglect, emphasizing the need for mutual respect in maintaining this popular spot’s welcoming environment.

If you find yourself wandering Madrid’s Centro district, CAFETERIA CHOCOLATERIA LOS NUEVOS ALPES offers more than just exceptional coffee and sweets—it’s a genuine slice of local life, served up with kindness and a smile. Whether you’re after a comforting hot drink, a sweet pick-me-up, or a quick yet authentic taste of local cuisine, this espresso bar promises a satisfying and memorable experience.

Very good food, fair price for the location in the middle of busy tourist street. We had the vegetarian paella which is hard to find in madrid center and it was delicious, albeit the quantity was a bit small. Overall impressed with this small bar/cafe! Lots of people in reviews complaining about the bathroom being dirty, they are the ones making it dirty. I see lots of tourists just head down without buying anything and ruining the bathroom up. One person running the whole place can't clean up after you!

Amazing place to have a great coffee, hot chocolate and local food!! Excellent customer service also!!!

Delicious fresh juices and great coffee. Highly recommend it.

Great little Place to get some food, drinks and smiles. Maria and her staff are lovely and welcoming, food is great and prices are fair. Highly recommended. We will be back Gracias

Super nice people in this little Churros Bar, also provides Paella yummy and pleasant atmosphere! I like it very much!

One of my favorite Cafeterias in Madrid. It looks like the usual Spanish bar but its churros are really good. The hot chocolate is great. Good prices and friendly staff.

Reasonable price and taste for quick local Spanish food.
